Do I have to pay for text messaging with Verizon if...?

Okay, I'm here in New York and my boyfriend, who also has a New York cell phone number, is in Aruba for vacation. Does my unlimited texting plan still work because he's in Aruba and does not have a cell phone number FROM Aruba?
