In North Carolina can an employer suspend you without pay for costing the company money?

My uncle got suspended without pay for three days for forgetting to change a plate die in a hose extrusion plant. He took an eight hour shift making a hose that was not to specs. This cost alot of money to the company. Is this legal or does something seem fishy?
